Dating back over 800 years, Kambala originated as a tribute to the gods for a healthy harvest. Highly trained buffaloes, guided by skilled runners, race in parallel slushy tracks (paddy fields). It is deeply tied to the Alupa and Feudal dynasties of coastal Karnataka.
